Why scatter feeding is more than just throwing food on the ground

At first glance, scatter feeding can look incredibly simple. After all, it's just a case of scattering some of your dog's food or treats across the ground and letting them find it.

But beneath this simple activity lies something much more valuable.

Dogs experience the world primarily through their noses. Their sense of smell plays a huge role in how they gather information, process their environment, and make sense of the world around them. Scatter feeding taps into this natural ability by encouraging dogs to use their noses to seek out food, rather than simply eating from a bowl or your hand.

As a form of enrichment, scatter feeding provides dogs with an opportunity to engage in natural foraging behaviours. Sniffing, searching, and problem-solving can help meet important behavioural needs while providing valuable mental stimulation. For many dogs, this can be a calming activity that encourages them to slow down, focus, and engage with their environment in a positive way.

Scatter feeding can also be incorporated into training.

One of our favourite ways to use it at KAHU is when teaching impulse control through a "leave it" cue. Rather than immediately allowing a dog to access scattered food, we can use the opportunity to practise waiting, making thoughtful choices, and checking in with their guardian before being released to enjoy the rewards. This helps build self-control while keeping training enjoyable and rewarding.

Importantly, the goal isn't perfection. It's about creating opportunities for your dog to succeed, learn, and engage with you in a way that feels positive and collaborative.

At KAHU, we believe some of the most effective training happens when we combine learning with activities that fulfil a dog's natural needs. Scatter feeding is a wonderful example of this - supporting enrichment, encouraging calm behaviour, and creating opportunities to strengthen communication between dogs and their guardians.
